Outlet:Yogyakarta within the Contemporary Indonesian Art Scene

With Jim Supangkat, Sumartono,Asmudjo Jono Irianto, Rizki A. Zaelani and M. Dwi Marianto

The emergence of contemporary art in Indonesia was influenced in reaction to the depoliticisation of art in the mid-1960s and early 1970s. In Yogyakarta, there was a noticeable shift away from realism, with its political connotations, towards art that questioned national identity and idealism and raised sociopolitical issues. Five essays from Indonesian curators and art historians detail and discuss the change and its implications for Indonesian art in the future. Each essay is amply illustrated with examples of contemporary art from Yogyakarta.

Jim Supangkat is an independent curator and critic. Sumartono is an art historian. Asmudjo Jono Irianto is an artist and curator. Rizki A. Zaelani is a curator, and M. Dwi Marianto is a curator and art critic.
