The Summer Carnival Foundation was initiated by the Antillean community. Over 2500 people take part in the parade: Antillians, Colombians, Cape Verdeans, Brazilians, Surinamese, Dutch, and other communities and nationalities. It celebrates the multicultural and international exchange in groups, or individually. By awarding the Rotterdam Summer Carnival the Prins Claus Fonds is explicitly acknowledging the positive contribution of Antillean culture to Dutch society.
