La Compagnie du Fil wants to contribute to the implementation of the art of puppetry in Burkina Faso and in Africa. Convinced that training is indispensable to create productions of quality, the company wants to progressively establish a permanent context in which puppetry artists from Burkina Faso and from West Africa in general can receive training. It is within this context, that the Company du Fil, with the support of it’s partners, has organised 5 workshops for puppeteers. The last workshop took place in 2007 in Oagadougou and was also supported by the Prince Claus Fund. Fifteen puppeteers from Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Niger and Togo participated in it. The workshop focused on Chinese shadow technique, a technique that is little known and hardly ever practised by African puppeteers. During the workshop, a new presentation was created and performed for the public in the Centre Culturel Français Georges Méliès in Ouagadougou.The current project named ‘Filigrane’ is meant to strengthen the already gained knowledge and techniques (papier mâché and shadow theatre) and is a completion of the previous workshops in 2006 and 2007. The play is written by Nadia Davids and it is based on the life of Zainunessa ‘Cissie’ Gool, an anti-colonial, anti-apartheid activist from District Six in Cape Town, South Africa, who was born in 1898 and lived and worked in the area until her death in 1966. The play narrates her life, offers an enactment of the vibrant, dynamic and cosmopolitan area that was District Six before removals and displays how stories and histories of South Africa are being continuously unearthed. The play uses monologue, images and mise en scene and original music to evoke the lost world of inner city Cape Town mid twentieth century and create a dialogue between the present and the past. read more (on the English version of the site)
Met steun van het Prins Claus Fonds is een tentoonstelling van fotografisch werk van Malick Sidibé (Mali) in Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam gerealiseerd. Malick Sidibé, Chemises is van 13 juni t/m 8 oktober 2008 te zien in Foam.
Centraal in de tentoonstelling staan enkele tientallen originele ‘chemises’, gekleurde vellen karton waarop Sidibé vele kleine fotootjes plakte die hij maakte tijdens feesten en partijen in Bamako, de hoofdstad van Mali. De feestgangers konden na afloop de foto’s bekijken en zo mogelijk bijbestellen. Alle getoonde ‘chemises’ zijn afkomstig uit de periode 1962-1973. Daarnaast worden enkele tientallen portretten getoond die Sidibé in de jaren zeventig maakte in zijn studio in Bagadadji, dé volkswijk van Bamako. Samen geven ze een bijzonder en veelal hartverwarmend beeld van de Malinese samenleving in de eerste jaren na de onafhankelijkheid.
Tijdens de Biënnale van Venetië 2007 ontving Malick Sidibé de ‘Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement’ voor zijn hele oeuvre. Dit jaar werd Sidibé eveneens gelauwerd door het International Centre for Photography (ICP) in New York met de 24ste Lifetime Achievement Award. Lees meer op de website van Foam
De Prins Claus Fonds Film Grant van 15.000 Euro werd op 30 januari 2008 uitgereikt aan Liew Seng Tat, een veelbelovende jonge filmmaker uit Maleisië voor de de film ‘In What City Does It Live?’. In de film houdt een Nigeriaanse migrant, op de vlucht voor de politie, zich schuil in een verlaten houten huis in een klein Maleisisch dorp. De dorpelingen zien in zijn aanwezigheid een mysterieuze schim en geloven dat het huis spookt. De jury kenschetst de opzet van de film als actueel, subtiel en geëngageerd en is onder de indruk van de visuele kracht van het verhaal. De film gaat in op sociale thema’s van de multiculturele samenleving en raakt het spanningsveld tussen traditie, globalisering en migratie. lees meer
