Speech delivered by Adriaan van Dis on the occasion of the presentation of the Dutch publication ‘Het verleden onder ogen: Herdenking van de slavernij’ (‘Coming to terms with the past: Commemorating slavery’), that was published by the Prins Claus Fonds and Arena Publishers (1999). The ceremony took place in the Old Hall of the Parliament’s Second Chamber, in The Hague, the Netherlands. Adriaan van Dis is a writer, co-author of the publication on the commemoration of slavery, and former Vice-Chairman of the Board of the Prins Claus Fonds.
In 2001 the Prins Claus Fonds Library published the English edition Facing up the Past, Perspectives on the Commemoration of Slavery from Africa, the Americas and Europe. read more
