The Destruction of Memory’

The war against culture and the destruction of heritage has received a lot of attention recent years.  In Syria and Iraq, the area considered the ‘cradle of civilization’, thousands of years of archaeological and religious heritage are being destroyed. With the increasing destruction, more and more initiatives have arisen within the region and from other parts of the world to protect, preserve and rebuild this heritage.

Based on the book of the same name by Robert Bevan, the documentary ‘The Destruction of Memory’ tells the different sides of the story. It not only explores the ongoing activities of ISIS and other extremist groups, but also reveals the decisions in the past that led in part to the current situation. In the documentary, Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova, Dutch minister of Foreign Affairs Bert Koenders and other international experts are interviewed.

Together with the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities, the Prince Claus Fund organizes this screening in collaboration with the Netherlands National Commission for UNESCO and Blue Shield the Netherlands.
