2012 Prince Claus Award presented to Phare Ponleu Selpak

On 1 April 2013, Phare Ponleu Selpak received the 2012 Prince Claus Award in Battambang, Cambodia. Phare Ponleu Selpak empowers youth in an innovative way through circus and theatre training.

Phare Ponleu Selpak was established in 1994 by eight young Cambodians who had spent their childhoods in the refugee camps at the Thai border. They returned to their hometown of Battambang determined to help rebuild Cambodian identity through traditional Khmer arts and culture. Phare Ponleu Selpak offers training in circus arts and now 20 of the original participants are young adults who have become outstanding professional artists performing in Cambodia and around the world.

The Prince Claus Fund recognised Phare Ponleu Selpak's outstanding contribution to the field of culture and development at a ceremony in Battambang on 1 April 2013. HE J.A. Boer, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Thailand, presented the 2012 Prince Claus Award.
