Prince Claus Laureate Zane Ibrahim of Bush Radio passes away

The Prince Claus Fund is saddened by the news of the passing of Zane Ibrahim of Bush Radio, recipient of the 2000 Prince Claus Award. Zane Ibrahim was co-founder and former Managing Director of Bush Radio from 1996 to 2010.

Zane Ibrahim was known as the 'father of community radio' for his role at Bush Radio, as well as being an anti-apartheid activist and award-winning journalist. Under his guidance, the community radio station (which started broadcasting illegally in 1993; licensed in 1995) tackled topics such as AIDS and Truth and Reconciliation in informative broadcasts and discussion programmes.

Zane used radio to reach out to people. As he once said, “community radio is 90% about community and 10% about radio.”

Zane was known amongst his peers as a unique, strong individual and critical thinker. He had an undying passion for radio and journalism and the extent of his influence upon the lives he touched is invaluable. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife, children and grandchildren.
