Francis Kéré receives Prince Claus Award in Burkina Faso

Congratulations Francis! On 11 February 2018, architect Diébédo Francis Kéré received the Prince Claus Award in Burkina Faso from His Excellency the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Mali, Mr. Jolke Folkert Oppewal. The Dutch Embassy in Mali and our former Network Partner Les Récréatrales co-organised this festive event together with the Fund.

Diébédo Francis Kéré (1965, Gando, Burkina Faso) is an architect who shows that architecture can be a generous profession dedicated to the well-being of communities. His designs are based on ecological principles and sustainability. He uses local materials and merges local building traditions with contemporary construction techniques. He was first honoured in a ceremony in Amsterdam in December, and now received the Prince Claus Award in Burkina Faso.

Festivities in Burkina Faso

The 11 February ceremonywas hosted by Etienne Minoungouandour partners at Les Récréatrales inGounghin. It was an evening of warm words and Burkinabe music, and later, dancing! In addition to the Dutch Ambassador, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Culture attended the celebration, as well as former Dutch Ambassador Burkina Faso Han-Maurits Schaapveld.

Joumana El Zein Khoury, director of the Prince Claus Fund joined the festivities together with supporters of the Prince Claus Fund. The group of Torchbearers traveled to Burkina to meet withKéré, experience his work, and visit partners supported by the Fund.

At the ceremony, Joumana spoke about Francis’ exceptional work in culture and development:

“Prince Claus famously quoted Burkinabe philosopher and politician, Joseph Ki-Zerbo, who insisted that you don’t develop people, people develop themselves. Francis Kéré is a wonderful example of that.”

Upon selecting Kere for the 2017 Prince Claus Award, the Awards Committee stated in their report:  “Diébédo Francis Kéré is awarded for the design and construction of buildings of great beauty that meet people’s needs; for establishing a holistic approach to architectural practice that stresses the importance of community involvement, respect for local culture and use of sustainable materials and methodologies; for honouring people’s pride in their cultural traditions and techniques, and re-interpreting them for contemporary use…”

Our thanks to the Dutch Embassy in Mali for assisting in organising this event, and also toRécréâtrales for being such generous hosts. Initiated in 2002, the Récréâtrales is a pan-African space for writing, creating, research and theatrical diffusion.Récréâtrales is the only existing platform in Africa for professional African theatre artists to meet, train and present.
