Restoration of the collection of the Institut des Belles Lettres

On January 5, 2010, a large fire in the library of l’Institut des Belles Lettres Arabes in Tunis destroyed more than 14.000 books, many of which dated from the 17th and 18th century. Housed in a 19th century palace, the building was greatly damaged and the collection exposed to heat, smoke and water. The collection is one of the most complete collections of classical Arabic literature up to the early 20th century and is used by students and secondary schools in the vicinity. CER supports the conservation of the remaining collection, including the restoration of 5000 books.

One of the most complete collections of classical Arabic literature

On 5 January 2010, a large fire in the library of l’Institut des Belles Lettres Arabes resulted in the loss of more than 14,000 books, many of them dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Although the fire brigade quickly arrived at the scene, it could not prevent large-scale damage to the building and the collection from exposure to heat, smoke and water. The Prince Claus Fund’s Cultural Emergency Response programme is supporting the restoration of 5000 books that can still be saved, with a donation of €35,000. L’Institut des Belles Lettres Arabes (IBLA) is a private institution run by the religious order of the Pères Blancs and is accommodated in a 19th century palace. The organisation publishes a humanistically oriented periodical about the Arab world and manages a library that contains extremely rare works. Professionals consulted by the Prince Claus Fund emphasized the unique value of the collection as one of the most complete collections of classical Arabic literature dating to the early 20th century and the important educational function that the library facilities serves for scholars and students attending schools in the vicinity.
