Prince Claus Fund extends network with two new partners

The Prince Claus Fund is extending its network through intensive co-operation with Museo de Antioquia from Colombia and Nepal’s Southasia Trust. Both organisations play an important role in regions torn apart by violence. Through their inclusion in the Prince Claus Fund’s Network Partnership Program, they will each receive € 180,000 over a period of three years, which is to be used for developing activities.

Museo de Antioquia (Colombia)

The Museo de Antioquia is located in Medellín, Colombia’s third largest city, and is an important place for culture and education. At the end of the 20th century, Medellín witnessed a great deal of violence and crime that involved, for instance, Pablo Escobar’snotorious Medellín Cartel. During this period, an average of 4,000 murders were committed in Medellín each year. However, the city has recently become a lot safer and the crime figures have fallen. Nonetheless, this armed conflict has resulted in a broken society with widespread violence: a place where human rights violations and injustice have permeated every area of social and institutional life. Because of their violent history, Medellín residents exist in a complex cultural, political and social context.

Southasia Trust (Nepal)

South Asia is one of the most violent regions of the world. With more than 1.4 billion inhabitants in only Afghanistan, India, Burma, Tibet and Pakistan, this area is extremely divided and politically unstable. A calmer future depends on achieving peace and stability between the various countries in this region. To accomplish this, it is necessary to create a thorough mutual understanding of this shared history. Up till now, this objective has received virtually no financial support from donor organisations, a situation that is mainly due to a lack of interest in art and culture. Conversely, this has simply added to thePrince Claus Fund’s motivation to enter into a partnership with the Southasia Trust.

"creating stability in regions torn by violence"

background information

The Museo de Antioquia aims to describe this complex history so as to nurture greater mutual understanding amongst a multicultural population that has been traumatised by violence. Hence, the museum is focusing on not only local history but also Columbia’s national history, and is organising a great many public events. One example of these activities is the Travelling Museum program. This concept is based on the belief that the museum must reach out to the community and operate beyond its physical walls. The Travelling Museum visits towns and neighbourhoods in the region, and develops workshops, debates and exhibitions with local groups. For the Prince Claus Fund, the Museo de Antioquia is a partner that perfectly mirrors its own philosophy that culture is a basic need for development.

The Southasia Trust is the publisher of Himal Magazine, a monthly, independent periodical comprising critical commentary on social and cultural issues. It is the first and only regional magazine in South Asia, and informs Indians and Nepalese about Pakistanis and Afghans, and vice versa. It represents a unique, regional forum for the promotion of freedom of speech. The first activity to be financed by the Fund consists of research into the forming of a network that will encompass a number of local archives in the region so as to improve access to information.

Network Partnership Programme

Unlike the regular projects supported by the Prince Claus Fund, the Network Partnership Program initiates a long-term relationship with an organisation that the Prince Claus Fund has already worked with. These Network Partners provide the Prince Claus Fund with an interesting local network. The Network Partnership Program was launched in 2002 and currently includes 20 Partners such as the Arab Image Foundation from Lebanon, Bangladesh’s Drik Picture Library and Arthub from China.
