15 Years Prince Claus Fund
"The decisive factor is the growing realization that development and progress can be realized only by people themselves, in an environment where there is respect for one's own culture, own language and our own lifestyle. Without respect and trust in one’s own culture and traditions progress is difficult to achieve. " (The late Prince Claus)
With this in mind the Prince Claus Fund protects and promotes culture and freedom of expression in the developing world for 15 years. The Fund sees culture as a basic need and as a motor for development. Even in crisis and conflict situations, where food, water, medicine and shelter are basic needs, culture is important as a unifying and meaningful element.
Culture also plays an important role in how communities and individuals handle crises and reconcile after conflict. Hutus and Tutsis in Burundi for instance, make radio programs together for Radio Isanganiro. The radio station received a Prince Claus Award in 2007.
The Fund maintains a strong network in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Fund is unique in its support for individuals in recognition of the fact that in dictatorships it can be impossible for journalists and artists to organize themselves. These are courageous people who often under difficult conditions managed to keep upright and are an inspiration to their environment.
The projects the Prince Claus Fund supports take place in developing countries, often on the frontline between oppression and cultural freedom. Local partners and their initiatives lead the Fund, following the conviction of Prince Claus that people cannot be developed, but that they develop themselves. The Prince Claus Fund also provides cultural emergency relief in over 80 places in the world. From tsunami affected Indonesia to the bombed Gaza strip and Haiti after the earthquake. 11 Prince Claus Awards are annually awarded to individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements in the field of culture and development and its positive impact on their immediate environment and society as a whole. The international network offers not only inspiration and recognition, but also a degree of protection in their often precarious and insecure existence.
The Prince Claus Fund is financially supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Postcode Lottery and for specific activities also receives support from individual donors and partners. The Fund invites everyone who wants to promote free expression and culture, to join in this unique international network of cultural pioneers. With your support, the Prince Claus Fund can continue its work over the next 15 years.
