Document is a book series of dossiers formed mainly of interviews and photographs, covering the realms of current Chinese experimental and avant-guard arts, such as visual art, film, literature, the performing arts of theater and dance, as well as the people involved in them. The series began in 2000 and three volumes have already been published in China. The original Chinese editions of Document were called Xianchang.

'Documentary filmmaking is my primary work, and naturally influenced how I planned and edited this book. My main structuring thought was: this is a “recording document of texts,” most importantly structured through interviews I have done with all sorts of people involved in current art, and including their own textual records, such as the working journals of artists. This will open up a path bringing readers closer to this very “visual” art, or these very “alternative” or “underground” people and works, in order to leave behind a documentary archive for later use.'
