Dancing and discussions inspire the Fund’s partners in Senegal

Network Partners had a vigorous start most mornings in Toubab Dialaw, with dancer and choreographer Germaine Acogny urging them to discover - and express for themselves - the exuberance of African dance. Once dance class had got everyone moving, the discussions that followed were lively and useful, whether on the sustainability of cultural organisations, the nature and tools of communications, or themes for the Prince Claus Fund, like the 2008 theme Culture and the Human Body.

A trip to the House of Slaves on Gorée Island was a stark reminder of the brutal history that links north and south. It was followed by a visit to the Dakar Biennale, Dak’Art, which was a happier reminder of the force of creativity.  A reception given by the Dutch Embassy brought together Senegalese artists, journalists and friends of the Prince Claus Fund.

Passionate journal by Shahidul Alam

All network partners agreed it was an inspiring week. Shahidul Alam has written a passionate journal of the visit on his blog, accompanied by his own powerful photos.
