Communicating the network partnership

Atthe Network Partnersmeeting in Toubab Dialaw, we agreed on the importance of communication and publicity. We discussed how to communicate the specialness of the Network Partneship to the outside world.  During the communication workshop we identified words that capture aspects of our partnership. We made an attempt at creating a motto that we could put under The Prince Claus Fund logo on all our websites. Butshort slogans just can’t catch it all, weall agreed. So Annette and Ginger took the bundle of descriptive verbs and adjectives and settled them into a small paragraph. In August we sent the paragraph out to all partners, who started writing back what they thought. We haven’t heardyet from everybody so If you’re still thinking about it, don’t think too long - make sure your input gets put in!

Coming soon: the definitive paragraph on Network Partnership for use on all our websites.

Message from the Awards Team

You have all received the nomination request for the 2009 Prince Claus Awards on ‘Culture and Nature’. As we are urgently looking for new nominators and nominations, we would kindly ask you to send your contributions to Fariba de Bruin-Derakhshani (f.debruin@princeclausfund.nl) or Merel Oord (m.oord@princeclausfund.nl)

Also, we would very much appreciate it if you could comment on the theme for 2009 ‘Culture and Nature’. Perhaps you have interesting ideas, projects or articles, which might be of use in our research. During the last Network meeting in Senegal, you gave very interesting perspectives on ‘Culture and the Human Body’. We would be really grateful to receive your input on the theme ‘Culture and Nature’ as well. We are looking forward to receiving your contributions!

Supersudaca artist in residence at the Curacao Centre for Contemporary Art

Juan Pablo Corvalan, Ana Rascovsky and Sofia Saavedra Bruno (Supersudaca) were invited by the www.institutobuenabista.com to be their artist in residence for the first two weeks of October. Together with their very young art students they hope to make small interventions in the public space that might have a great impact on the use of the public areas of some specific neighboorhoods. This time the interventions might go hand in hand with a campaign of consience concerning the pollution of the still on work refinery that is situated in the heart of the island.

Actions in 2008 of the Cultural Emergency Response

CER provides prompt and effective emergency relief for cultural heritage damaged or destroyed by man-made or natural disasters. CER believes that rescuing cultural heritage provides hope and consolation to affected communities and that cultural emergency relief should be an integral part of humanitarian aid.

By providing initial financial support CER within six months of a disaster, aims to stabilise the situation, prevent further damage and implement basic repairs within in order to create the conditions to enable further restoration. CER relies on local expertise and partnerships for both the identification of cultural emergencies and the implementation of its emergency activities. CER limits all contributions from its own resources to a maximum of €35,000 per action. If necessary, CER seeks additional funding in co-operation with other partners.

In 2008 CER has taken action in response to several disasters.

News from the Ecole des Sables

Germaine presented at the National Arts Convention in Denver /USA on the 13th of June the Ecole des Sables and her work philosophie in front of 3,500 guests. It was a great success and opened the path for new collaborations in the future.

Between July 8th and August 8th a group of 25 dancers and actors from Lyon in France came for a workshop and at the same time to work with the village people of Toubab Dialaw (theatre groupe, Rapper, Footballer, Wrestler, Fishermen). A facinating experience with several public representations for the village at the end. This project allowed us to make better known the work of the Ecole des Sables and to create a stimulating exchange which made the relationship with the village people againstronger than before. This experience was filmed by a film crew and will be presented on French Television.

At the moment we have a group of 28 dancers and dance teachers from Holland for a 6 weeks intensive workshop at the Ecole des Sables. The group is completed with 15 Senegalese dancers who will benefit from this workshop and also allow a lively exchange between the Africans and Europeans.

The Ecole des Sables has requested a 3 year grant of financial support from the Dutch Foundations DOEN and HIVOS,which hopefully will be accepted and help to stabalise the financial situation of the Center.
