In February 2008, Supersudaca, a Prince Claus Fund network partner, announced the winning submissions for Endless (S)trips, a competition of ideas and scenarios for the urbanisation of mass tourism areas along the Caribbean coastlines. The competition Endless (S)trips called on architects and other professionals to reflect on the relation between local factors, tourists and the tourist industry, the government, infrastructure and landscape. The winning concepts have been published on the website www.sudapan.org.
Throughout the world, the obsession with journeys and exoticism has led to an enormous growth in both travel and the development of organised mass tourism. The Caribbean is the most popular destination, and its economy now largely depends on tourism. This mono-dependency has resulted in a new form of urbanisation that is damaging the environment. Through this competition, Supersudaca hopes to expose the territorial key factors that determine the position of both Latin America and the Caribbean on the current world agenda.
The winning designs are:
Supersudaca is a group of young Latin American architects who, with a few exceptions, all studied at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. It has been a network partner of the Prince Claus Fund since 2006. The Sudapan competition represents a part of the partnership between these two organisations. This partnership aims at discussing themes such as international tourism; it also interprets them in the context of the local culture and urban architecture. This initiative of the Prince Claus Fund and Supersudaca was also supported by the IAAC (Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia) and the CCEBA (Centro Cultural de Espana en Buenos Aires). In excess of 600 participants from more than 70 countries took part in this competition. The jury consisted of such well known architects as José Castillo (Mexico), Vicente Guallart (Barcelona), Winny Maas (MVRDV, Rotterdam), Carlos Weeber (Curacao, the Dutch Antilles) and the 1997 Prince Claus Fund Laureate Bruno Stagno from Costa Rica.
