APAC, Bolivia

The Asociacion Pro Arte y Cultura (APAC) started its activities in the Santa Cruz region in 1994. The association brought together professionals with recognised experience in the cultural sector. These professionals organized activities to promote the culture of the Chiquitos region. The activities of APAC have an impact on the people of the region of Grand Chiquitania, Bolivia and Latin America.

From its inception APAC has been a network of professionals pooling together in the advancement of arts and culture with an international outreach. Its success can be attributed to its grassroots acceptance and qualities as well. Among its network qualities the International Festival of Latin American Baroque and Renaissance Music constitute one of the main festivals in Latin America, and among the most important worldwide, the theatre festival of APAC steadily grows and includes participants from Latin America and other continents, productions have been done in collaboration with Latin American and European partners, musicologists, musicians, actors and artists from around the world visit APAC on a regular basis.

The festivals have grown and gained regional recognition. APAC has realised a series of publications on the musical heritage of the indigenous people of Chiquitos and Beni therefore making sure that the heritage is properly conserved and disseminated. Indigenous communities conserved more than 10.000 pages of original scores that make up the heritage of the period before the Jesuits were expulsed from Latin America in 1767. Through scientific meetings and the festivals this music has become known and can now be performed.

APAC is a meeting point for Latin American cultural initiatives. It promotes and supports a variety of cultural festivals and artistic events. There is no other similar institution working in the field of culture in the region or in the country. APAC has been the fundamental player in the initial creation of the choir and orchestra of Urubicha composed by youngsters from an indigenous community some 330 km from Santa Cruz. The model has been reproduced in some 10 communities and is now the reference for thousands of youngsters in the region that form an enormous pool from which promising singers and musicians can be identified and trained. The Bolivian Baroque concert held at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam January 31, 2005, and the production of international quality CDs are examples of the success of APAC’s projection.

APAC and its initiators received the Prince Claus Award in 2002, along with other international awards and recognitions.
