UCAD, University Centre for Arts and Drama, Butare, Rwanda

Rwanda is a small central African country that has unfortunately gained notoriety for its problems spanning for a period longer than half a century.
It is against this back drop, that on the 17th of December 1999 the decision was made to create the University Centre for Arts and Drama at the National University of Rwanda with the mission of:
• Preventing and managing conflict and promoting positive values through the strategy of cultural actions,
• Communicating socially through arts,
• Promoting talent at the national level,
• Diversifying arts at the university and at the national level, by increasing the technical potential of artists and their training, and
• Spreading Rwandan culture at the national, regional and international level.

Physically distanced from the main university premises, UCAD, stands on its own as a high education and production entity in the fields of dance, theatre and drama.

Overcoming the difficulties of a relatively new centre, UCAD has over the years realized its objectives through the creation and presentation of its work, which has included among others: “Corps et voix, paroles Rhizomes.” and “Le Petit Lion Couché” that were first presented in Rwanda in 2000 and in France and Germany in 2001.

Beneath these most evident productions lies important ground work. UCAD concentrates on teaching principles and polishing training of young and aspiring artists. This is done through workshops.
Among these workshops is Arts Azimut that takes up a privileged position in the activities of the centre and has, in its fourth edition, brought together over 800 artists from Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

In addition to Arts Azimut, other training workshops include four permanent workshops each on theatre, dance, music and visual art. Arpege is yet another example of the numerous workshops, which includes three month courses of initiation to various music instruments.
