Resumption of batik activities in the Imogiri district of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The Imogiri district is known for “Bantulan”, the traditional art of batik painting. For many centuries, batik has been one of the most important sources of income for the Imogiri community. However, the earthquake brought these batik activities to a complete standstill.

The Jogja Heritage Society has set up a program that, through the resumption of batik activities in Imogiri, is contributing to the restoration of the economic and cultural life of the disaster’s survivors. CER provided €25,000 of financial support that enabled the recommencement of batik production. CER has also contributed to the rebuilding of both a temporary museum and a market for these unique batik items.
