Reinforcing the Rao-Rao mosque, West Sumatra, Indonesia

On 6 March 2007, the province of West Sumatra experienced an earthquake that measured 6.2 on the Richter Scale. This resulted in the collapse of thousands of houses in the area around the provincial capital of Padang. The mosque in the village of Rao-Rao was also badly damaged. It was built in 1901 and has a unique architectural style that refers to the region’s four ethnic communities. The earthquake caused the mosque’s roof to shift, which could have lead to its eventual collapse. CER provided immediate assistance for the reinforcement of the supporting walls and roof so that the mosque would become eligible for long-term restoration. A sum of €25,000 was made available.

In this project, CER has established a direct partnership with the management of the Rao-Rao mosque, who are being supported by the experts of the Indonesian Heritage Trust. The activities commenced in August 2007. However, during the following month the province of West Sumatra was hit by yet another earthquake. Fortunately, the mosque in Rao-Rao suffered no further damage.
