Nias Heritage Museum, Nias, Indonesia

CER provided €15,000 for the immediate reconstruction of the Nias Heritage Museum in Indonesia. On 28 March 2005, Nias - an island off the coast of Sumatra - was devastated by an earthquake, which was an aftershock of the seaquake that caused the tsunami of 26 December 2004. The Nias Heritage Museum houses a valuable collection of prehistoric artefacts that reflect the island’s cultural history.

The earthquake completely destroyed the collection’s temporary storage depot and also damaged a great many items. This meant that it was essential to build a new depository so as to prevent the collection’s further deterioration and ultimate loss. CER’s donation contributed to the construction of a permanent, earthquake-proof museum depository. Through the depository’s reconstruction, CER has helped to preserve this unique collection.
