The devastating coincidence of four storms within less than four weeks led to massive flooding in the throughout the country. Some twenty vodou sanctuaries located in the municipality of Croix-des–Bouquets/Noailles and vividly decorated with wall paintings suffered severe damages.
Created by different artists, they constitute a unique compendium of voudou iconography that illustrates how the voudou religion, belief and practice evolved over the past 60 years. The sacred and magical objects found within the sanctuaries (earthenware, statues, charms ...) testify not only to the practices of the different time periods, but also to the vitality of voudou culture today. With a CER grant of 25.000 Euro, the Fondation AfricAmerica will restore the four most damaged sanctuaries and their paintings, and create an inventory of all heritage located within the sanctuaries.
