Floods and severe rainfall lead to damage cultural heritage in Gambia, August- September 2008

CER will support the immediate restoration of James Island and the related CFAO Building (Compagnie Francaise d’Afrique Occidentale) at Albreda and the restoration of the Stone circle museum in Kerr Batch with an amount of € 44.300,-.

The Gambia has in 2008 experienced unusually heavy rainfall, especially in August and September, usually accompanied by gusts of wind. Their effects have been particularly severe on the above mentioned monuments. With the support CER provides, the buildings on James Island will be restored and measures will be taken to prevent erosion of the Island in the Future. The related CFAO building, which is situated on the river bank suffered similar damages and will be fully restored. The strong winds blew of the roof of the Stone circle Museum in Kerbatch, exposing the interior and the collection to the elements. With the help of CER the roof will be restored immediately and damages on the interior of the museum will be repaired.
