Restoration of the Baluwerti Fort in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

On 27 May 2006, Yogyakarta was badly affected by an earthquake that measured 6.3 on the Richter Scale. This resulted in many casualties and severely damaged the city’s infrastructure. The historic Baluwerti Fort dates from 1782 and is built around the famous Kraton (Palace) of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. Due to its historical relationship with the Palace, the Fort maintains an important social and cultural significance for Yogyakarta, and functions as one of the city’s major landmarks.

The earthquake badly damaged the Fort’s walls, gateways and corner bastions. CER’s contribution of €25,000 funded the reconstruction and restoration of the historic bastions on the Fort’s two corners. These repairs were completed in the course of 2006 and 2007 under the supervision of the Jogja Heritage Society of Yogyakarta.
