UMAM Documentation and Research was seriously damaged during the conflict in Southern Lebanon in the summer of 2006. It serves as a cultural centre and independent archive for war documentation, and is located in Southern Beirut. Bombing resulted in extensive damage to both the roof of the main building (the “Hangar”) and a part of the archive. Immediate action was needed to prevent the main building’s further deterioration and the possible loss of the archive.
CER provided €24,800, which has enabled the restoration of the main building’s roof along with the partial digitalisation of the UMAM D&R archive. These activities commenced in November 2006. UMAM D&R was responsible for the implementation of these repairs. It re-opened its doors to the public and resumed its cultural activities in the spring of 2007.
