Partly through Cordaid’s donation of €38,000, CER was able to contribute to the reconstruction of a manuscripts library in Tanoh Abee, Aceh. This Dayah (a traditional centre for Islamic education) houses a collection of more than 3,500 antique manuscripts in Malay, Arabic and Acehnese. This unique collection has been partly compiled by local families, and therefore represents a wealth of traditional Acehnese culture. The Dayah of Tanoh Abee is completely devoted to the conservation of traditional Islamic culture in Aceh.
The earthquake, which caused the tsunami of 26 December 2004, damaged the old library’s foundations. With Cordaid’s help, CER supported the construction of a new library building for the collection of manuscripts. This will ensure the survival of these icons of traditional Acehnese culture for generations to come. Jakarta’s PPIM UIN University was responsible for completing this work.
