14 December,Slow Dating with Jorge Villacorta
Lunch with the renowned curator/geneticist

(omdat de voertaal van de bijeenkomst Engels is ook deze tekst in Engels)
Have lunch with Jorge Villacorta and hear him speak on the subject of the particularities of cultural spaces in the Andes.

Monday 14 December

Time:                13h00 – 14h30
Location:           Mediamatic Bank, Vijzelstraat 68, 1017 HL, Amsterdam. Tel +31206389901
Organisation:     Prince Claus Fund & Mediamatic
Language:          English

Jorge Villacorta will be discussing the following (in his words): “The cultural map of South America after the end of colonial rule changed under the influence of contact with the rest of the world. Countries on the Atlantic created powerful links with Europe and contemporary art benefited from the contact with the artistic scenes of different European capitals. The Andes acted as a dividing line where communication with artistic centers was difficult and less frequent. These countries tended to develop their own isolated scenes, in midst of political and social turmoil. In the 21st Century the barriers have been lowered and the particularities of these spaces have become apparent and attractive.”

The Prince Claus Fund and Mediamatic have invited Jorge Villacorta to speak about his work which combines art and curatorship with science and new media. He will be interviewed by Xander Karstens, curator at De Hallen, Haarlem, followed by an informal lunch where guests will be able to have a chat with Jorge.

Jorge Villacorta is a Peruvian geneticist, art critic and independent curator, whose strong interest in contemporary visual art has developed parallel to his scientific work. He is co-founder and academic director of ATA. He lives in Lima and is currently working in the Tissue Bank, Institute of Child Health.

14 December, Opening of the exhibition of work by 2009 Prince Claus Laureate Liang Shaoji (China)

The exhibition can be seen until 12 March 2009

Liang Shaoji

Liang Shaoji (b. 1945, Shanghai, China) creates unique meditations on nature and human existence. Graduating in textile studies at the Zhejiang Art Academy, Liang felt limited by the grid of warp and weft. Drawn to raw silk, he began to breed silkworms – symbols of generosity and endurance in Chinese culture – and incorporates them in artworks by setting them to spin their thread around objects. Resisting the rampant commercialisation of modern Chinese art, Shaoji takes his time in creating his works of art since silkworms only produce silk threads twice a year. His works have been exhibited at the Venice (1999), Istanbul (1999) and Shanghai (2000, 2006) biennales. Liang Shaoji is awarded with a 2009 Prince Claus Award for his evocative artworks that offer a meditative approach in which art becomes nature and nature becomes art. Liang Shaoji will be presented with the Award by the Netherlands Ambassador in China. The exhibition is curated by Marianne Brouwer. More information on Liang Shaoji

Bintou Were, a Sahel Opera

The idea of a Sahel Opera originally came from His Royal Highness Prince Claus of the Netherlands (1926 - 2002). His idea was to create an African opera production composed and performed by people from the various Sahel countries. The Prince felt that the Sahel region in particular had a wealth of talent in the fields of dance, music, design and fashion. He envisaged an opera that would highlight all those talents. The Prince Claus Fund, that was established in his name, took up the challenge to initiate the project. The Sahel Opera beautifully illustrates many dimensions of the link between culture and development. Successful and sold out performances of the Opera took place among others in the Netherlands during the Holland Festival in 2007 and in Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The Prince Claus Fund is proud that the Opera will now be performed in various African Countries. Read more about Bintou Were, a Sahel Opera on www.sahelopera.com

Ilán Lieberman: Niño Perdido (Lost Child)
Project of the Month October 2009

Niño Perdido shows 75 small portraits of disappeared children from Mexico City made by artist Ilán Lieberman. For the past three years Lieberman has been carefully reproducing photos of missing children taken from the Mexico City daily Metro using a microscope and mechanical pencils. Some images are blurry and some are out-of-focus, but in each carefully drawn image, he has painstakingly recreated the exact pictorial format of the original newspaper image, as if also creating a memorial to the lost child.

The exhibition at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery is the first European exhibition of Niño Perdido. Niño Perdido was previously exhibited in the Museum of Mexico City and the El Paso museum in Texas. Ilán Lieberman enlists the archive as a form of commemoration in Niño Perdido. Alternating between document and monument, information and photography, Niño Perdido functions as a kind of pre-obituary for the lost who may never be found.

The Prince Claus Fund Gallery is based at Herengracht 603 in Amsterdam. Opening hours: Tuesday – Friday 10.00 – 17.00 hrs. Free entrance. Ilan Lieberman: Nino Perdido is on show until 30 November.

2007 Prince Claus Laureate Faustin Linyekula (Congo) performs 'More more more... future'

Dance and music as vehicles of hope

Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula's more more more… future is an ode to the Ndombolo; music consisting of a swirling fusion of rumba, traditional rhythms, Sunday-like brass band music and funk. In the texts, materialism is a frequent subject: the musicians sing about their affluence, power, women, designer clothing and expensive cars. Linyekula escalates this, using this form of dance as a liberation. He adds his own compositions to the energy of the guitars and voices, calling us to ‘dream with our feet firmly on the ground’. more more more… future, as both concert and dance performance, swings and shakes towards a positive evocation of the future.

Dancer/choreographer Faustin Linyekula was born in Congo in 1974. He later travelled to Kenya, where in 1997 he founded with Opiyo Okach Kenya’s first modern dance group: the Gàaracompany. In 2001 Linyekula founded the Studios Kabako in Kinshasa and since 2006 he recentered activities in Kisangani, working to establish three neighbourhood cultural centers around performing arts and image. In 2007 he was awarded the Prins Claus Award for his original and idealistic way of using dance and theatre to allow reflection upon his country’s violent past and present.

This performance is part of the International Choice of the Rotterdam Schouwburg and fits their theme 'A sense of Belonging' Read More on www.rotterdamseschouwburg.nl

17 June - Special opening of Kaveh Golestan: photographer in Iran

Date: Wednesday 17 June, 17.00 hrs
Location: Prince Claus Fund, Herengracht 603, Amsterdam

Kaveh Golestan (1950-2003) is the only photo journalist who worked continuously in Iran, from 1975 until his death in 2003. Around the world, people have come to know Iran through Golestan’s photos. In international newspapers and magazines his images have kept us informed about the revolution in Iran and the return to power of the Ayatollah Khomeini, the war between Iran and Iraq and the Kurdish liberation struggle.

In the middle of political upheaval, Golestan made portraits of social groups oppressed by the regime, such as prostitutes, labourers and mentally handicapped children. They are close by and look directly into his lens. They are proud, ashamed, worried or curious. He brings the truth of his country out into the open and his camera is without fear. In 2003 this costs him his life when he steps onto a landmine.

Hengameh Golestan, the widow of Kaveh Golestan will be present to open the exhibition. The photos where previously exhibited at the Kunsthal Rotterdam.

April 2009

16 April - Spring Party at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery celebrating Flowers and Lingerie

On 16 April the Fund would like to invite you to its spring party where the Prince Claus Fund Journal #16 Flowers and Syrian Lingerie are celebrated.

Flowers in collaboration with Bidoun Magazine is a celebration of the frivolous, the camp, the martyred. Taking both literal and metaphorical flowers as an inspiration, Bidoun has commissioned its contributors around the world to think about the 'floral,' broadly defined. Resulting in a veritable ecology of communists, virtuous outcasts, and beauty queens. The Flowers issue will be launched on the occasion of the spring party.

The exhibition on Syrian Lingerie includes photos of the lingerie by Lebanese photographer Gilbert Hage as well as lingerie boxes especially designed by Lebanese designer Rana Salam. The Prince Claus Fund Library publication The Secret Life of Syrian Lingerie will be for sale.

A presentation will be given by Kaelen Wilson-Goldie who is a journalist based in Beirut. She works as a staff writer for The National, a contributing editor for Bidoun, and a correspondent for Artforum. Previously the arts & culture editor of The Daily Star in Lebanon, she has written for The New York Times, The Times of London, and The Village Voice, among other publications. She has also contributed essays on contemporary art and visual culture in the Arab world to a number of exhibition catalogues and anthologies.

Location: Prince Claus Fund
Herengracht 603, 1017 CE Amsterdam
Visiting hours: You can visit the exhibition from Tuesday till Friday from 10.00h till 17.00h

The Prince Claus Fund Library publication The Secret Life of Syrian Lingerie inspired the Prince Claus Fund to organise an exhibition in its Gallery in Amsterdam. The Secret Life of Syrian Lingerie reveals a previously unknown and unexplored site of Arab design, fashion and sexuality. The book sheds light on the social mores of Syrians, both Christian and Muslim, and overturns western preconceptions about Islam and the veil.

“…. The Secret Life of Syrian Lingerie by Malu Halasa and Rana Salam is something to behold – a baroque riot of color and gimmickry – and by twinning photos with reportage, the authors challenge a fair few misconceptions about women, sex and humor in the Muslim world.”
—Will Hobson, ‘The Secrets of Syrian Lingerie Revealed,’ The Observer

The most outrageous and exuberant lingerie in the world comes from a place you’d probably never expect: Syria. Adorned with everything from faux fur, artificial flowers, and feathered birds to plastic toy cell phones, these intimates flash lights, play music, even vibrate. The Secret Life of Syrian Lingerie sheds light on social more of Syrians, both Christian and Muslim, thereby questioning western preconceptions about Islam. 6 December, Jeanguy Saintus performs 'Zantray' and 'Trilogy' in Tropentheater Amsterdam

2008 Prince Claus Fund Laureate brougt 'Zantray' to the stage of the Tropentheater in Amsterdam. It was a sold out performance of the especially for the Prince Claus Awards Ceremony choreographed 'Zantray' (inner soul) and an existing choreography called Trilogy. According to Jeanguy Saintus Zantray was: 'An in-depth exploration of our soul... A journey that brings together past and future, culture and spirituality, tradition and modernity. Zantray challenges the deepest and most sincere feelings we carry inside of us … Zantray... Hope, Pride, Fear... flowing with the sweat on our skins'.' Trilogy he describes as following:
Trilogy Three women… three goddesses
One ritual to honour the womb, the blood and the roots. The three goddesses are:
Erzulie Je Wouj: the one with the flame in her eyes. Mistress of all sensuality. Erzulie Freda: the one with the waterfall under her foot. Lady of all passions. Erzulie Danto: the one to love and fear. Deity of the highest joy and deepest despair.

6 December, opening of Kaveh Golestan:
“The Robert Capa of Iran” photographs in the Kunsthal, Rotterdam - 1st March 2008

Iranian photojournalist Kaveh Golestan witnessed his country’s recent history from before the 1979 Islamic Revolution until his untimely death from a landmine in 2003. He covered war, revolution and Iran’s dispossessed, with a harsh realism that was, in his words, “like a slap in your face.” The Kunsthal has drawn photos for this exhibition from the Prince Claus Fund Library publication, 1950-2003 Kaveh Golestan: Recording the Truth in Iran, Edited by Malu Halasa and Hengameh Golestan. According to Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat “Few have been able to unleash the ‘truth’ with such artistic and humanitarian vision; Kaveh Golestan was a photographer, a reporter, but most of all, a poet of history whose unforgettable images speak to us with such urgency about human suffering and horror of war. Golestan’s work and life were a ‘cry’ for justice to his country and the world at large.”

CAFÉ CURIOSITÉ – Arts and Politics in Cambodia

In the new Café Curiosité series, SICA will highlight art and culture from places on the globe that normally have difficulty getting access to mainstream arts fora. In each one-hour Café Curiosité session we will invite a special international guest to speak in depth about the lay-out of the culture field in their specific region, area of expertise, interests and pre-occupations. Café Curiosité will take place at unusual surprising locations and will be organised in close collaboration with a co-organising cultural organisation.
The first Café Curiosité was organised in cooperation with the Prince Claus Fund. The guest was Ly Daravuth (1969), Cambodian artist, art historian and co-founder of the Reyum gallery in Phnom Penh. Ly Daravuth focussed on the cultural scene of modern day Cambodia, and particularly on the Reyum gallery, that “spontaneously” developed into a local non-profit, non-governmental organization supporting and promoting Cambodian arts and culture. Today, Reyum has developed into more than just a gallery. It functions as a publishing house, an art school for underprivileged children and a platform for education, exchange of ideas and creative expressions.
The meeting was moderated by NRC-journalist Bas Heijne and took place in Restaurant Cambodja City,

Resisting Urbicide: Restoring Palestinian heritage, presentation 11 September at Gemak

The Prince Claus Fund and the Cultural Emergency Response Program (CER) in cooperation with the Vrije Academy and the Gemeente Museum organised the public interview; Resisting Urbicide: Restoring Palestinian heritage. “Urbicide” is the destruction of urban identity, often an intentional act of war.
The presentation took place in the framework of the exhibition “No Man’s Land?” which can be viewed at Gemak from 6 September to 26 October 2008. In this exhibition Palestinian artists reflect on the meaning of being Palestinian. Despite the fragmentation and dispersal of Palestinian communities throughout the world, Palestinian artists try to give shape to the Palestinian identity. The results of this reflection can be seen in the exhibition.

Photographs by Malick Sidibé in Foam Amsterdam

Prince Claus Fund in collaboration with Foam present a unique exhibition of the work by Malick Sidibé (Mali) called Chemises.

The exhibition can be seen at Foam from 13 June to 8 October 2008.

Centrepiece of the show is a series of original chemises, coloured sheets of card on which Sidibé pasted small prints of the photos he took at parties and events in Bamako, the capital of Mali. Partygoers were able to view and order copies of photos after the event. The chemises displayed here date from between 1962 and 1973. They are accompanied by numerous portraits taken by Sidibé in the 1970s at his studio in Bagadadji, a working-class area of Bamako. Together the displays offer a unique and often heart-warming insight into Malinese society in the early years following independence.

Malick Sidibé received a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement for his entire oeuvre at the Venice Biennale of 2007. This year Sidibé was also honoured by the International Centre for Photography (ICP) in New York with their 24th Lifetime Achievement Award. read more on the website of Foam

Design: Simón Vélez, photo: ashes & snow exhibition

Background information

Simón Vélez’s aesthetic and technical innovations in bamboo have enhanced its construction potential and challenged mainstream architectural trends. He invented a new method to build foundations and roofs, which transformed one of the world’s oldest building materials, namely bamboo, into a modern resource that meets the strictest international construction regulations and can even outperform steel.

On 16 December Simón Vélez receives the 2009 Principal Prince Claus Award

darfur

Cover of Prince Claus Fund Library Publication Darfur and the Crisis of Governance in Sudan. A Critical Reader.

Background information

The ongoing conflict in the western Sudanese region of Darfur has received unprecedented attention from the international media and human rights organizations, and it has captured the attention of millions of people around the world. Those seeking to learn about the conflict, as well as those who have reported on it, often rely on information produced by the various organizations that are addressing the humanitarian crises spawned by the conflict. In turn, most coverage of the Darfur crisis provides only a cursory understanding of the historical, economic, political, sociological, and environmental factors that contribute to the conflict. Moreover, the perspectives of the people of Darfur and the Sudan have not been adequately heard. As a result, Sudanese civil society’s active engagement in resolving the country’s problems goes unrecognized.
