Presentation of the 2006 Prince Claus Awards

On Wednesday, 13 December 2006, the Iranian graphic designer Reza Abedini (1967, Iran) received this year’s Principal Prince Claus Award of €100,000 out of the hands of H.R.H. Prince Friso at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam.

Graphic artist and Professor of Graphic Design and Visual Culture at the University of Tehran, Reza Abedini has a passion for the innovative development of visual languages. This has led him to link literature and aesthetics, creating a unique visual dialect that reflects the rich history of Persian art, typography and poetic sensibilities. Through his skill in adapting this collective knowledge and heritage, Reza Abedini makes available a new and compelling vocabulary for the 21st century.

Reza Abedini had been granted the 2006 Principal Prince Claus Award in recognition of his talent as a superb graphic designer and his individual skill in transforming the knowledge and achievements of Iran's artistic heritage into a new and compelling art form. The Award recognises the impact of graphic design as a powerful global medium of communication, and highlights the tradition and role of graphic design in the laureate's own country and across the world.
