On 28 November 2006, the Prince Claus Award was presented to Michael Mel by His Excellency, Ambassador Niek van Zutphen of the Dutch Embassy in Australia, who travelled to Goroka in Papua New Guinea for this event. The ceremony was attended by 100 guests including the Iranian artist Shokufeh Kavani, who had come all the way from Sydney for the presentation.
