The presentation of the Prince Claus Award to Madeeha Gauhar in Pakistan

On 15 December 2006, the Prince Claus Award was presented in Islamabad to Madeeha Gauhar by His Excellency, Ambassador Willem Andreae and GG Jamal, the Minister of Culture. The ceremony was attended by approximately 200 guests and consisted of representatives of the diplomatic community, the government, cultural circles, civil society and the media.

Madeeha Gauhar’s theatre group Ajoka gave an hour-long performance that featured highlights of its oeuvre, each of which was briefly introduced by Madeeha’s sister Feryal Gauhar, who is a well-known actress in Pakistan. The audience was treated to an impressive and colourful mix of emotional monologues, group theatre, song and dance. A reception was held after the performance. There was also a great deal of media attention, which included camera crews from the two largest TV stations (PTV and GEO-TV) and correspondents from most of the English-language newspapers.
