Niède Guidon

Niède Guidon (1933, Brazil) has discovered over 700 prehistoric sites of which 426 are in shelters under rocks with ancient paintings at the Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara in North-East Brazil. She has been responsible for their preservation, development and management. Guidon has set up a cultural centre and the Musée de l’Homme Américain in the same park where study facilities are being offered in the field of archaeology and the preservation of cultural heritage. Her community support facilities have been established in local communities, and provide social services, health care, education and training in ecology, prehistory and restoration. With meticulous scholarship, she has recorded over 35,000 images, has published numerous papers and books, and has also organised conferences. Guidon’s award reflects the Fund’s focus on the preservation of cultural heritage.
