Edgar Langeveldt

Edgar Langeveldt (1969, Zimbabwe) studied law and politics before turning his skills, incisive observation and acting talent to social commentary as a stand-up comic. He is well known in Southern Africa.A member of a minority that is caught between dominant racial groups, he uses his outsider’s view and humour as a camouflage to reveal contradiction, inequality and social injustice. He writes his own material, which is based on current local and international events, and has the ability to create hilarious characters from all races and sections of society. Despite the difficult environment in which he operates, Langeveldt has retained his intellectual independence. This award has been granted as a part of the Fund’s ‘Humour and Satire’ theme. It also reflects the Fund’s emphasis on ‘Spaces of Freedom’: places that provide cultural refuge along with the opportunity for freedom of both speech and thought in times of oppression.
