Ebrahim Nabavi (1958, Iran) is a well-known Iranian journalist and writer, who believes that the satirist’s job is to unmask those who propagate fallacies. During the late 1990s, his articles parodying official speeches and statements, and revealing hypocrisy, lies and transgression, were published in various reformist newspapers. This resulted in reprisals where his column was moved from paper to paper, while his readership continued to grow. Nabavi won an award at the 7th Press Festival in Iran for his satirical writing. The following day he was arrested and was sent to jail for 18 months. Living in exile in Belgium since his release, he is still writing, performing stand-up comedy and publishing – especially on the internet. He has published 31 books, including the Prison Memoirs, which are now in their 5th edition. Nabavi’s popularity and impact continues to be felt in his homeland.
