Ferreira Gullar uses his literary talents for the benefit of popular culture: following his return to Brazil from exile in Argentina and Chile, he started writing for TV soap operas. In so doing he improved the quality of narrative on Brazilian television. Although Gullar is primarily a poet, he has also employed his sense of cultural and social commitment as an author, playwright, essayist, art critic and activist.
