He advocates freedom, democracy and human rights - a position that has shaped and inspired generations of intellectuals. He has plotted new paths for thought in the Arab world, through promoting translation and introducing modern political and philosophical concepts to the Faculty of Philosophy at Damascus, which he helped to establish.
