About the awards
The Prince Claus Awards are presented annually to individuals, groups and organisations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean for their outstanding achievements in the field of culture and development and the positive effect of their work on their direct environment and on the wider cultural or social field. Quality is a sine non qua for an Award. The Prince Claus Fund presents one Principal Prince Claus Award of €100.000,- and ten Awards of €25.000,-. The Principal Award of € 100,000 is presented during a festive ceremony in Amsterdam in December every year. The additional awards of € 25,000 each are presented with ceremonies at the Dutch embassies to the countries where the recipients live.
The Prince Claus Awards Committee
The Prince Claus Awards Committee 2010 consists of five experts from diverse countries representing a broad range of disciplines. The chairman of the committee also is a member of the Board. The Prince Claus Awards Committee Members provide their services to the Prince Claus Fund completely voluntarily for a term of two years. The term can be extended by two more years.
The Bureau of the Prince Claus Fund selects candidates for the committee from its network in the countries the Fund operates in and presents them to the Board which takes the final decision.
Presentation of the Prince Claus Awards
The Principal Prince Claus Award is presented annually in Amsterdam by one of the Fund’s Honorary Chairmen, H.R.H. Prince Friso and H.R.H. Prince Constantijn, in the presence of the Royal Family and an audience consisting of Dutch and international guests, to the Principal Laureate. The other ten Awards are presented at ceremonies in the Dutch embassies to the countries where the recipients live and work.
Publication Prince Claus Awards
Every year, the Fund publishes an Awards book in which the laureates are presented. Experts are asked to write a laudation, photos of the work of the laureates are published and attention is given to the specific theme.

Selection procedure
Each year the Prince Claus Fund invites approximately 250 Dutch and international experts with expertise in the field of culture and development to nominate candidates.
The group of experts consists of network partners of the Prince Claus Fund, laureates, former members of the Prince Claus Awards Committee and other persons from its network. By exception it is possible to present a nomination, but it is not possible to nominate oneself or one’s own organisation. Nominations are strictly confidential.
Each year the Fund receives approximately 80 nominations. The Bureau of the Fund thoroughly researches the nominations and asks for advice about the nominations to the Dutch Embassies and the advisors in its network. The Prince Claus Awards Committee meets twice a year to come to a final list of laureates. This list is presented for approval to the Board of the Prince Claus Fund. After the approval by the Board, laureates are approached personally by the Director of the Fund to inform them about the Award and to ask them if they will accept it. There are no rules bound to the prize money. In other words, the laureates can spend the money as they please. In September the Fund makes the laureates public via a press release. The advisors and the Dutch Embassies are informed through a letter.
