Opening: Zanele Muholi featured at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

location:Exhibition galleries, Audi Zaal 0.1 Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
address:Museumplein 10, 1071 DJ Amsterdam, Netherlands
date:07.07.2017
end date:07.07.2017
time:from 20:00 till 22:00

South African photographer, visual activist and Prince Claus Laureate Zanele Muholi (1972, Umlazi, Durban) will make her solo museum debut at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam starting 8 July. The exhibition includes works from Muholi’s latest series, Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Black Lioness, 2015 to the present). Zanele Muholi received the Prince Claus Award in 2013 for her outstanding contributions to the field of culture and development. Join us for the exhibition opening on 7 July at 8 p.m.

Starting with her very first work Faces and Phases (ongoing since 2006), Muholi's work focused on the LGBTQ community in South Africa, affirming and celebrating the multiplicity of human identity and sexuality. Muholi’s self-appointed mission is: “to re-write a black queer and trans visual history of South Africa for the world to know of our resistance and existence at the height of hate crimes in SA and beyond”.

The Stedelijk Museum exhibition, Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Black Lioness, 2015 to the present) includes a series of self-portraits which mark a radical new step in the artist's oeuvre.  Experimenting with dramatic poses and lighting, Zanele captures the multiple roles of a black lesbian woman through the use of high-contrast black and white tonal values.

Part of the Stedelijk Museum exhibition will present a comprehensive selection of works from two other important series,'Faces and Phases’, and 'Brave Beautie’; and a projection of the documentary 'We Live in Fear' (2013). Also, a documentary space has been created in one of the exhibition galleries for 'Inkanyiso' (Zulu for 'the one who brings light'), the multi-media internet platform founded by Zanele Muholi in 2009 to create a visual history of LGBTQ communities.

Prior to her solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, Zanele Muholi will be artist-in-residence at BijlmAIR in Amsterdam Southeast, where she will work on her most recent series of self-portraits, Somnyama Ngonyama.

The exhibition will be open from 8 July through 15 October 2017.
