documenta 14: Sahel Opera book and film
|address||:||Rainer-Dierichs-Platz 1, Kassel|
|time||:||from 20:30 till 0:00|
The Prince Claus Fund is excited to announce a book and film about the Sahel Opera – Bintou Wéré: African Opera by Koulsy Lamko and An Opera of the World by filmmaker Manthia Diawara. The book will be presented on 9 June 2017 at documenta 14 in Kassel following the German premiere of An Opera of the World. Both the book and film will be launched in Amsterdam later this year.
The Sahel Opera brought together African storytelling and musical traditions with European opera. The story of how this unique opera came to be is told in Bintou Wére: African Opera – from the initial idea of HRH Prince Claus, to the making of the libretto, to the sold-out performances in Bamako, Amsterdam, and Paris.
Manthia Diawara's film An Opera of the World interprets themes dramatized in the opera and offers meditations on contemporary migration by Fatou Diome, Alexander Kluge, Nicole Lapierre, Richard Sennett, and Diawara himself.
documenta 14 will host the German premiere of An Opera of the World with a Q&A with Manthia Diawara, the book presentation of Bintou Wéré: African Opera, and a special performance by singer Carlou D.
