During the programme, Tavakolian will be interviewed by writer, photography consultant and former Photography Director of the Telegraph Magazine (The Daily Telegraph) Cheryl Newman, with an introduction by World Press Photo Managing Director Lars Boering and insights into Tavakolian's practice from independent curator, writer and advisor to the British Museum on modern/contemporary Iranian collections Vali Mahlouji.

Newsha Tavakolian is one of the first professional female photojournalists in Iran. Her work ranges from bold reportage of political events to compelling portraits and evocative series on subjects such as the insecurity of middle-class youth and female Kurdish fighters.

Tavakolian will receive the Principal Prince Claus Award on 2 December in Amsterdam. Her exhibition ‘I know why the rebel sings’, curated by Vali Mahlouji, is on view at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery 27 November 2015 till 4 March 2016.

Cheryl Newman

Cheryl Newman is a writer and photography consultant living in London. For more than fifteen years she was the Photography Director of the Telegraph Magazine, a glossy weekend supplement with The Daily Telegraph newspaper. She raised the profile of the magazine commissioning intelligent and inventive photography worldwide.

 

She teaches workshops globally on fashion, editorial and documentary photography. She has been a committee member of the Royal Photographic Society. She have served as a judge for many photographic awards including; the Ian Parry Award, the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, the Getty Grant 2015, the Lucie Awards, New York 2014, the Santa Fe Editors Choice 2014, HIPA Dubai 2014, PhotoEvidence Book Award 2015, the Flash Forward Award 2015 and the 2015 Moran Contemporary photography Prize, Sydney, Australia. She is on the Faculty of the Bilder Nordic School in Oslo and a regular speaker on the photo circuit in the UK, US and Europe. 

 

Vali  Mahlouji

Vali Mahlouji

Vali Mahlouji is an independent curator and writer and advisor to the British Museum on its modern/contemporary Iranian collections. Mahlouji’s recent curatorial work includes exhibitions at FOAM (Amsterdam), Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts, Whitechapel Gallery and Photo London.

 

He is founder of the research and curatorial platform Archaeology of the Final Decade, which investigates, conserves and recirculates into cultural memory areas of art and culture that have remained obscure, under-exposed, over-looked or in some cases destroyed.

 

Mahlouji has been published by Photo London, Encyclopædia Iranica; Asia Society Museum, New York; The Abraaj Group Art Prize, Dubai; Darat al Funun, Amman; and Sharjah Biennial, among many other institutions and media. His new titles – Prostitute 1975-77 and Perspectives on the Festival of Arts, Shiraz-Persepolis - are being published by Thames & Hudson and Black Dog Publishing.

Lars Boering

Lars Boering was appointed managing director of World Press Photo in January 2015. From 2010-2014 he was managing director of the Dutch Photographers’ association (DuPho).
