Afghanistan pictured anew

In the city Bamyan, situated in Afghanistan’s central highlands, thirteen young men and women are invited to look at their surroundings in a new light through the lens of a camera. In the workshop that is offered by the 3rd Eye Photojournalism Center and supported by the Prince Claus Fund, photography functions as an instrument for social development, cultural reflection and preservation, women’s emancipation and youth empowerment.

"It aims at broadening horizons"

goals of the workshop

The 3rd Eye Photojournalism Center

The 3rd Eye Photojournalism Center is engaged in the production and exhibition of news and art photography and documentaries about Afghanistan, as well as in the organization of training sessions for photographers. The course, supported by the Prince Claus Fund, not only teaches professional skills and knowledge to a new generation of photographers and journalists, as such opening avenues that otherwise seemed inaccessible for them. It also aims at broadening horizons and increasing awareness, which should result in a nuanced, realistic and socially engaged portrayal of life in Afghanistan. The young photographers, coming from five different provinces of the central highlands, gain an insight into the life of Afghans in all its aspects and variety and are taught how to catch it from different perspectives. Developing an eye for their region’s historical heritage, cultural values and beauty in face of rapid modernization, the students learn to make pictures that reflect a country that oscillates between tradition and modernity. Moreover, during the three month course social issues are raised on the role of free and independent media in democracies. And the participants are encouraged to be actively engaged in the struggle for the emancipation of women and for women’s rights – an ambition that finds its reflection in the composition of the course itself, in which virtually as many men as women are involved.

Background information

The project initiated by the 3rd Eye Photojournalism Center in Afghanistan bears significance both for within the country’s national boundaries as well as beyond. Young people grown up in the isolated highlands of a conflict-stricken country are promised a brighter future, while at the same time contributing to a more balanced international image of Afghanistan.
